Introduction to TOEFL 

The Test of English as a Foreign Language or commonly known as TOEFL is a standardised test of English for students whose first language is not English. TOEFL test is developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) organization. There are two formats for the TOEFL test: Online test or Internet-based Test (iBT) that is the test taken over the internet connection and the Paper-delivered Test (PDT). It consists of four sections: I assume the following: Present, reading; past, writing; present, listening; past, speaking. 

Reading 

This component assesses the student’s everyday Language learner’s capacity to read academic passages in English. In TOEFL IBT reading section, there are three or four passages, for each of which 12-14 questions are given. Your total time for this section will be 60-80 minutes. 

Listening 

The listening section assesses how well you comprehend spoken English in face-to-face interactions and in what is said in class. TOEFL IBT listening section consists of six or seven passages, each of which is accompanied by 2-3 questions. You will have 60-90 minutes allocated for this part of the test.

Speaking 

Speaking section determines your proficiency in speaking about familiar topics with the emphasis on the English language. The speaking section of IBT TOEFL comprises of six tasks and having in mind the length of each task, you will be given 20 minutes tops. 

 Writing 

 The writing section assess your English writing skills in covering issues familiar to you. It is made of two genres of tasks and is comprised of Integrated Writing Task which lasts for 20 minutes while Independent Writing Task lasts for 30 minutes.
